What Is an Academic Index?

An academic index is a simplified way to combine multiple academic factors into a single score for comparison.

This calculator uses GPA, SAT or ACT performance, and academic rigor to create a general index from 0 to 100. It is designed as a comparison tool and does not reproduce an official college admissions formula.

How GPA Is Converted

GPA is converted from the 4.0 scale to a 0–100 component so it can be combined with standardized test performance.

GPA Component = GPA ÷ 4.0 × 100
GPA GPA Component
4.00100
3.8095
3.5087.5
3.2080
2.4060

How SAT and ACT Scores Are Converted

SAT and ACT scores use different scales, so the calculator converts either score to a 0–100 test component.

SAT Component

SAT Component = (SAT Score − 400) ÷ 1200 × 100

ACT Component

ACT Component = (ACT Score − 1) ÷ 35 × 100

This normalization allows SAT and ACT profiles to be evaluated with the same general index formula.

Academic Index Example

Suppose a student has a 3.50 GPA, an ACT score of 29, and strong academic rigor.

Component Value
GPA Component87.5
ACT Component80.0
Rigor Adjustment+4
87.5 × 0.65 + 80 × 0.35 + 4 = 88.875

The estimated Academic Index is 88.9 out of 100, which this calculator classifies as a Strong academic profile.

How to Interpret Your Academic Index
