How to Calculate Your Grade

Your current class grade can be calculated in different ways depending on how your course is structured. The two most common methods are points-based grading and percentage-based grading.

Points-Based Grade

In a points-based system, add all points earned and divide them by the total points possible.

Grade % = Points Earned ÷ Points Possible × 100

Percentage-Based Grade

If each assignment or test counts equally, add the percentage grades and divide by the number of items.

Average Grade % = Sum of Percentage Grades ÷ Number of Items

Grade Calculation Example

Suppose your class uses a points-based grading system and you have the following scores:

Item Points Earned Points Possible
Homework4550
Quiz1820
Midterm76100
Project92100

Total points earned: 231
Total points possible: 270

231 ÷ 270 × 100 = 85.56%

On the grading scale used by this calculator, an 85.56% corresponds to a B.

Letter Grade Scale

This calculator uses a common U.S. letter grade scale. Your school or instructor may use different cutoffs.

Percentage Letter Grade
93–100%A
90–92.99%A-
87–89.99%B+
83–86.99%B
80–82.99%B-

67–69.99%D+
63–66.99%D
60–62.99%D-
Below 60%F

Points vs. Percentage Grading

Points-based and percentage-based grading can produce different results because they weight coursework differently.

Method How It Works Best Used When
Points Each item is weighted by its total points possible Your course uses a total-points grading system
Percentage Each entered percentage is weighted equally Your assignments or scores should count equally

If assignments have different weights or categories such as homework, exams, and projects, use the Weighted Grade Calculator instead.

What Is a Good Grade?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my current grade?
Add the points you have earned, divide by the total points possible, and multiply by 100. If your course uses equal percentage scores, average the percentages instead.
How do I calculate a grade from points?
Divide the number of points earned by the number of points possible and multiply the result by 100 to get your percentage grade.
How do I calculate an average grade from percentages?
If each score counts equally, add all percentage grades and divide by the number of scores entered.
What letter grade is 85%?
On the grading scale used by this calculator, 85% corresponds to a B. Your school or instructor may use different grade boundaries.
Do all assignments count equally toward my grade?
Not always. In a points-based system, assignments with more available points have a larger effect. Some courses also use weighted categories, where exams or projects may count more than homework.
What is the difference between a grade calculator and a weighted grade calculator?
A standard grade calculator combines points or equal percentage scores. A weighted grade calculator accounts for assignments or categories that contribute different percentages toward the final course grade.
Can I use this calculator for tests and quizzes?
Yes. You can enter tests, quizzes, assignments, projects, homework, or any other graded coursework as long as you know the points or percentage score.
How can I find what grade I need on my final exam?
Use the Final Grade Calculator to combine your current course grade, the weight of the final exam, and your desired final course grade.
Why is my calculated grade different from my school's gradebook?
Your course may use weighted categories, dropped assignments, extra credit, rounding rules, or a different grading scale. Check the grading policy in your syllabus for the exact method.
