How to Calculate GPA

GPA, or Grade Point Average, is calculated by converting each course grade into grade points, multiplying those points by the course credits, and then dividing the total grade points by the total number of credits.

GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credits

Example

Suppose you completed three courses:

Course Grade Grade Points Credits Quality Points
Mathematics A 4.0 3 12.0
English B+ 3.3 4 13.2
Biology A- 3.7 3 11.1

Total grade points: 36.3
Total credits: 10

36.3 ÷ 10 = 3.63 GPA

GPA Grade Scale

Most U.S. schools and colleges use a 4.0 GPA scale. A typical unweighted scale looks like this:

Letter Grade GPA Value
A+4.0
A4.0
A-3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B-2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C-1.7
D+1.3
D1.0
D-0.7
F0.0

Some schools use different grading scales, especially for honors, AP, IB, or weighted courses. Always check your institution's grading policy if you need an exact official GPA.

What Is a Good GPA?

A “good” GPA depends on your school, program, and academic goals. In general, a higher GPA gives you more options for competitive colleges, scholarships, internships, and graduate programs.

GPA General Interpretation
4.0Excellent academic performance
3.5–3.9Strong academic performance
3.0–3.4Good academic standing
2.0–2.9Passing, but may limit some opportunities
Below 2.0May require academic improvement

These ranges are only general guidelines. Admission requirements and academic standards vary significantly between schools and programs.

Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA usually uses a 4.0 scale, where an A is worth 4.0 points regardless of course difficulty.

A weighted GPA gives additional points for more difficult courses such as Honors, AP, or IB classes. Depending on the school, weighted scales may go up to 4.5, 5.0, or even higher.

Type Typical Scale Course Difficulty Included?
Unweighted GPA 0.0–4.0 No
Weighted GPA Often 0.0–5.0 Yes

This calculator uses a standard 4.0 scale. For Honors, AP, or other weighted classes, use the Weighted GPA Calculator.

Tips for Calculating Your GPA Accurately

  • Use the exact credit hours assigned to each course.
  • Check whether your school uses plus and minus grades.
  • Confirm whether your GPA is weighted or unweighted.
  • Do not mix semester GPA with cumulative GPA unless your school calculates them together.
  • Use your school's official grading scale when accuracy is important.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a numerical measure of academic performance calculated from your course grades.
How do I calculate my GPA?
Convert each grade into grade points, multiply the grade points by the course credits, add the results, and divide by the total number of credits.
What is a 4.0 GPA?
A 4.0 GPA usually represents an A average on an unweighted 4.0 scale.
How are credit hours used in GPA calculation?
Courses with more credit hours have a greater effect on your GPA. Grade points are multiplied by course credits before the final average is calculated.
Does an A+ count as 4.0?
On many 4.0 scales, both A and A+ are worth 4.0 points. Some institutions use a different scale, so check your school's grading policy.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA usually has a maximum of 4.0, while a weighted GPA may award additional points for advanced classes such as Honors, AP, or IB courses.
Can I calculate GPA from percentages?
Yes. Percentage grades can be converted to grade points using a grading scale. Because grading scales differ between institutions, the result may be approximate.
How do I calculate semester GPA?
Use only the courses completed during that semester. Multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add the results, and divide by the semester's total credits.
Is a 3.5 GPA good?
A 3.5 GPA is generally considered strong, although admissions standards and academic requirements vary by school and program.
