Calculate your GPA using letter grades, percentages, and credit hours on a 4.0 scale.
Add each course, choose your grade, and enter the number of credits.
GPA, or Grade Point Average, is calculated by converting each course grade into grade points, multiplying those points by the course credits, and then dividing the total grade points by the total number of credits.
Suppose you completed three courses:
| Course | Grade | Grade Points | Credits | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | A | 4.0 | 3 | 12.0 |
| English | B+ | 3.3 | 4 | 13.2 |
| Biology | A- | 3.7 | 3 | 11.1 |
Total grade points: 36.3
Total credits: 10
36.3 ÷ 10 = 3.63 GPA
Most U.S. schools and colleges use a 4.0 GPA scale. A typical unweighted scale looks like this:
| Letter Grade | GPA Value |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 |
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D- | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
Some schools use different grading scales, especially for honors, AP, IB, or weighted courses. Always check your institution's grading policy if you need an exact official GPA.
A “good” GPA depends on your school, program, and academic goals. In general, a higher GPA gives you more options for competitive colleges, scholarships, internships, and graduate programs.
| GPA | General Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 4.0 | Excellent academic performance |
| 3.5–3.9 | Strong academic performance |
| 3.0–3.4 | Good academic standing |
| 2.0–2.9 | Passing, but may limit some opportunities |
| Below 2.0 | May require academic improvement |
These ranges are only general guidelines. Admission requirements and academic standards vary significantly between schools and programs.
An unweighted GPA usually uses a 4.0 scale, where an A is worth 4.0 points regardless of course difficulty.
A weighted GPA gives additional points for more difficult courses such as Honors, AP, or IB classes. Depending on the school, weighted scales may go up to 4.5, 5.0, or even higher.
| Type | Typical Scale | Course Difficulty Included? |
|---|---|---|
| Unweighted GPA | 0.0–4.0 | No |
| Weighted GPA | Often 0.0–5.0 | Yes |
This calculator uses a standard 4.0 scale. For Honors, AP, or other weighted classes, use the Weighted GPA Calculator.
