Calculate your overall course grade when assignments, tests, projects, or categories have different weights. Enter each score and its weight to see your weighted average.
Add each assignment, test, project, or category with its score and percentage weight.
A weighted grade gives different assignments, exams, projects, or categories different levels of importance. Each score is multiplied by its weight before all weighted values are added together.
Convert each percentage weight to a decimal before multiplying. For example, a 25% weight becomes 0.25.
Suppose your course has four graded components with different weights:
| Item | Score | Weight | Weighted Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 90% | 20% | 18.00 |
| Quizzes | 80% | 15% | 12.00 |
| Midterm | 75% | 25% | 18.75 |
| Final Project | 95% | 40% | 38.00 |
Add the weighted values:
The weighted course grade is 86.75%, which corresponds to a B on the grading scale used by this calculator.
Course weights normally add up to 100%. However, you may want to calculate your current grade before every category has been completed.
If the entered weights total less than 100%, this calculator normalizes the completed portion of the course. That means it calculates your average based only on the weighted items you entered.
If the weights total more than 100%, check your entries or your course syllabus because the grading weights may have been entered incorrectly.
| Method | How It Works | Best Used When |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Grade | Combines points or equal-percentage scores | Assignments use equal importance or a total-points system |
| Weighted Grade | Each score contributes according to its percentage weight | Tests, projects, homework, or categories have different weights |
Use the regular Grade Calculator when your course is based on points or equally weighted scores.
Many courses divide grades into categories such as homework, quizzes, exams, projects, and participation. Each category may contribute a different percentage toward the final course grade.
| Category | Example Weight |
|---|---|
| Homework | 20% |
| Quizzes | 15% |
| Midterm Exam | 25% |
| Final Project | 40% |
In this example, the final project has twice the weight of homework, so changes to the project score have a much larger effect on the overall grade.
