How SAT Scoring Works

The Digital SAT has two scored sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section is reported on a scale from 200 to 800 points.

Your total SAT score is the sum of the two section scores, producing an overall score from 400 to 1600.

SAT Score Formula

Total SAT Score = Reading and Writing Score + Math Score

For example, a Reading and Writing score of 650 and a Math score of 720 produce a total SAT score of 1370.

SAT Score Example

Section Score
Reading and Writing650
Math720
650 + 720 = 1370

The total SAT score is 1370 out of 1600. In this example, Math is the stronger section by 70 points.

SAT Score Range

Score Range
Reading and Writing200–800
Math200–800
Total SAT Score400–1600

The two section scores contribute equally to the total SAT score, so each section can account for up to half of the 1600-point total.

Why Raw Scores Do Not Convert Directly to SAT Scores

The Digital SAT is adaptive, so the relationship between the number of correct answers and the final section score is not represented by one universal raw-score conversion table.

This calculator therefore uses Reading and Writing and Math section scores directly rather than estimating an official SAT score from raw correct-answer counts.

Use official score reports or practice-test scoring information to determine your section scores, then enter them above to calculate the combined total.

What Is a Good SAT Score?

A good SAT score depends on the colleges you are considering and the score range of admitted students at those schools.

In general, a higher SAT score gives you a stronger academic testing profile, but admissions decisions usually consider many other factors as well.

Total SAT Score General Interpretation
1500–1600Very strong score range
1400–1490Strong score range
1200–1390Competitive for many colleges
1000–1190Middle score range
Below 1000May be below the typical range at more selective schools

Always compare your score with the admissions profile of the specific colleges you plan to apply to.

Balanced vs. Uneven SAT Section Scores

Two students can have the same total SAT score but very different section profiles.

Reading & Writing Math Total
7007001400
7606401400
6407601400

A balanced profile has similar scores in both sections. An uneven profile can highlight a stronger academic area, such as Math or Reading and Writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my SAT score?
Add your Reading and Writing section score to your Math section score. Each section ranges from 200 to 800, producing a total SAT score from 400 to 1600.
What is the highest SAT score?
The highest possible total SAT score is 1600, with up to 800 points in Reading and Writing and 800 points in Math.
What is the lowest SAT score?
The lowest possible total SAT score is 400, made up of a minimum score of 200 in each of the two sections.
Can I calculate a Digital SAT score from the number of correct answers?
Not with one universal conversion formula. The Digital SAT uses an adaptive scoring model, so the same number of correct answers does not always produce the same official section score.
What is a good SAT score?
A good SAT score depends on the colleges you are targeting. Compare your score with the typical score ranges of admitted students at those schools.
Does Math count more than Reading and Writing on the SAT?
No. Both sections are scored from 200 to 800 and contribute equally to the total SAT score.
Can two students have the same SAT score with different section scores?
Yes. For example, 700 Reading and Writing plus 700 Math and 760 Reading and Writing plus 640 Math both produce a total score of 1400.
Should I focus on my total SAT score or section scores?
Both can matter. The total score gives an overall measure of performance, while section scores can show stronger or weaker academic areas.
Is this calculator an official College Board scoring tool?
No. This calculator combines the section scores you enter to calculate the total SAT score. Official SAT scores are issued by College Board.
