Calculate an assignment grade from points earned, percentage or weight, and estimate how it affects your overall course grade.
Course grading rules and letter-grade boundaries vary by instructor and school. Use the result as an estimate.
An assignment grade calculator helps you calculate the percentage and estimated letter grade for an assignment, homework task, project or other graded activity.
You can also use it to estimate how a weighted assignment may change your overall course grade.
This is useful when you know the assignment score, total points or weight and want to quickly understand the result.
Choose the mode that matches the information you have.
If an assignment is graded with points, the percentage is calculated by dividing the points earned by the total possible points and multiplying by 100.
For example, earning 42 points out of 50 gives an assignment grade of 84%.
If the assignment has a specific weight in the course, its impact depends on that weight. A 10% assignment affects the overall course grade less than an assignment worth 25%.
To calculate an assignment percentage:
To estimate the course grade after a weighted assignment:
Convert the assignment weight from a percentage to a decimal before using the second formula. For example, 10% becomes 0.10.
Suppose you earn 42 points on an assignment worth 50 points.
Assignment percentage: (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%
Points missed: 50 − 42 = 8
Estimated letter grade: B
If your current course grade is 84%, the assignment score is 92%, and the assignment is worth 10% of the course:
Estimated course grade: 84 × 0.90 + 92 × 0.10 = 84.8%
An assignment with a higher course weight has a larger effect on your overall grade than a low-weight assignment.
For example, a project worth 20% of your course grade can move your average much more than a homework assignment worth 5%.
If your assignment score is above your current course grade, it can raise your average. If it is below your current grade, it can lower it.
The same calculation can be used for homework, essays, projects, lab work and other assignments where you know either the points earned or the assignment weight.
For example, 18 points out of 20 equals 90%, while a project score of 92% worth 10% of the course can be used to estimate its effect on your overall grade.
Always use the grading rules and weights listed in your syllabus when available.
An assignment percentage shows the share of total available points you earned. For example, 73 points out of 80 equals 91.25%.
The calculator also provides an estimated letter grade using a common percentage scale.
Your instructor may use different grade boundaries, rounding rules or curves, so the letter grade should be treated as an estimate.
