For example, earning 42 points out of 50 gives a midterm score of 84%.
If the midterm counts toward your overall course grade, its impact depends on the exam weight. A midterm worth 20% of the course contributes 20% of the final weighted calculation.

When using the second formula, convert the midterm weight from a percentage to a decimal. For example, 20% becomes 0.20.
Suppose you earned 42 points on a midterm worth 50 points.
Midterm percentage: (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%
Estimated letter grade: B
Now suppose your current course grade is 86%, your midterm score is 78%, and the midterm is worth 20% of the course.
Estimated course grade: 86 × 0.80 + 78 × 0.20 = 84.4%
The effect of a midterm exam depends on how much of the overall course grade it represents. A midterm worth 10% of the course has a smaller impact than one worth 30% or 40%.
If your midterm score is higher than your current course grade, it can raise your overall average. If it is lower, it can reduce your estimated course grade.

A midterm percentage shows how much of the available score you earned on the exam. For example, 45 points out of 50 equals 90%.
