AcademyCalc Midterm Grade Calculator

Midterm Grade Calculator

Calculate your midterm exam grade from points, percentage or exam weight and estimate how it affects your overall course grade.

Grading scales and course weighting rules vary by school and instructor. Use the result as an estimate.

What Is a Midterm Grade Calculator?

A midterm grade calculator helps you calculate your midterm exam score and estimate how that score affects your overall course grade.

You can use it in two ways: convert earned points into a percentage and letter grade, or combine your current course grade with a weighted midterm exam score.

This is useful when you want to check your midterm result quickly or understand how much an exam may raise or lower your current grade.

How to Use the Midterm Grade Calculator

Choose the calculator mode that matches the information you have.

  1. Select Score → Grade if you know the points you earned and the total possible points.
  2. Enter both values to calculate your midterm percentage and estimated letter grade.
  3. Select Course Impact if you want to estimate how the midterm affects your overall course grade.
  4. Enter your current course grade, midterm score and the percentage weight of the midterm.
  5. Click Calculate Midterm Grade to see the result.

How a Midterm Grade Is Calculated

If your midterm is graded using points, the percentage is calculated by dividing the points earned by the total possible points and multiplying by 100.

For example, earning 42 points out of 50 gives a midterm score of 84%.

If the midterm counts toward your overall course grade, its impact depends on the exam weight. A midterm worth 20% of the course contributes 20% of the final weighted calculation.

Midterm Grade Formula

To calculate a midterm percentage from points:

Midterm Grade (%) = (Points Earned ÷ Total Points) × 100

To estimate the course grade after a weighted midterm:

Estimated Course Grade = Current Grade × (1 − Midterm Weight) + Midterm Score × Midterm Weight

When using the second formula, convert the midterm weight from a percentage to a decimal. For example, 20% becomes 0.20.

Midterm Grade Example

Suppose you earned 42 points on a midterm worth 50 points.

Midterm percentage: (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%

Estimated letter grade: B

Now suppose your current course grade is 86%, your midterm score is 78%, and the midterm is worth 20% of the course.

Estimated course grade: 86 × 0.80 + 78 × 0.20 = 84.4%

How Midterm Exam Weight Affects Your Grade

The effect of a midterm exam depends on how much of the overall course grade it represents. A midterm worth 10% of the course has a smaller impact than one worth 30% or 40%.

If your midterm score is higher than your current course grade, it can raise your overall average. If it is lower, it can reduce your estimated course grade.

This is why the calculator asks for the midterm weight when estimating course impact.

Midterm Percentage and Letter Grade

A midterm percentage shows how much of the available score you earned on the exam. For example, 45 points out of 50 equals 90%.

The calculator also provides an estimated letter grade using a standard percentage scale. Your school or instructor may use a different grading system, so the letter grade should be treated as a general reference.

Always compare the result with the grading scale listed in your syllabus or course materials.

Midterm Grade vs Final Grade

A midterm grade represents your performance around the middle of a course, while a final grade usually reflects your overall performance across the full semester or academic term.

Your midterm exam may be only one part of the final grade alongside homework, quizzes, projects, participation and a final exam.

If you want to calculate what score you need on your final exam, use the Final Grade Calculator instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my midterm grade?
Divide the points you earned by the total possible points and multiply by 100. For example, 42 points out of 50 equals 84%.
How does a midterm affect my overall grade?
The effect depends on the midterm weight. A midterm worth 20% of the course contributes 20% to the weighted grade calculation, while the rest of the course contributes the remaining 80%.
What is a good midterm grade?
That depends on your course, school and grading scale. A percentage that earns an A or B in one class may be graded differently in another, so always check your syllabus.
Can a midterm raise my course grade?
Yes. If your midterm score is higher than your current course grade, a weighted midterm can increase your estimated overall grade.
Is a midterm grade the same as a final grade?
No. A midterm grade reflects performance around the middle of the course, while the final grade usually includes all assignments, exams and other graded work from the full term.
