How AP Lit Scoring Works

The AP English Literature and Composition exam includes a multiple-choice section and a free-response section.

The multiple-choice section contributes 45% of the exam score, while the three free-response essays together contribute 55%.

The calculator converts both sections into weighted values and adds them together to estimate a composite score out of 100.

AP Lit Score Formula

MCQ Weighted Score = (Correct Answers ÷ 55) × 45
FRQ Weighted Score = (Total Essay Points ÷ 18) × 55
Composite Score = MCQ Weighted Score + FRQ Weighted Score

The composite score is then used to estimate an AP score from 1 to 5.

Estimated AP Lit Score Ranges

AP score cutoffs can vary by exam year and form, so this calculator uses approximate composite-score ranges for planning purposes.

These ranges are estimates and should not be treated as official College Board score cutoffs.

MCQ vs. Free-Response Weight

The multiple-choice section contributes 45% of the estimated AP Lit composite score, while the three free-response essays together contribute 55%.

Because the essays make up more than half of the total weight, stronger free-response performance can significantly raise your estimated score even when your multiple-choice result stays the same.

AP Lit Essay Breakdown

The free-response portion includes three essay tasks:

  • Poetry Analysis: analyzes how a poet uses literary techniques to develop meaning.
  • Prose Fiction Analysis: analyzes how an author uses literary elements and techniques in a prose passage.
  • Literary Argument: develops an interpretation of a literary work in response to a given prompt.

Each essay is entered on a 0–6 scale and contributes to the combined free-response score.
